Do you miss winter yet? Snowfall in Old Montreal

New York City slush
The early afternoon air held my breath in little clouds. I think we all knew what was coming, the first real snowflakes of the season had fallen around noon and the sky was looking more ominous by the minute. A white Christmas? No - a day too late, but close enough. Blizzard warnings had scrolled at the top my weather app on my phone since yesterday night, people were just now scrambling all over town to run their errands and stock up before the storm really hit.

Why yes, it is coooold. Stolling down SoHo, the mercury had plummeted and the wind had picked up. Bundling up was crucial.

Wipers up. In hindsight, probably futile.

And so it began.

This is a mix of “warm” spices that I love to use in the wintertime. Use it for making mulled apple cider or hot mulled wine, and incidentally, the same spices used for Masala Chai. Add a spoonful of honey in with the apple cider, a slice of orange in with the red wine, or brew with strong black tea. From left to right: Cardomom, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Star Anise, Black Pepper.
